We specialize in gentling wild Mustangs to prepare them for future homes, ensuring they are ready to build lasting partnerships with their new owners.

Taming & Training

Our taming and training process begins with the careful selection of Mustangs. We choose horses based on their confirmation, eye set, and behavior, ensuring they have the potential to excel in training and form meaningful partnerships with future adopters. Our approach is built on respect, trust, and patience, creating a strong foundation that allows these incredible horses to transition from the wild to a life of partnership and purpose. We prioritize the physical and emotional well-being of the Mustangs while preparing them for successful adoption.

Step 1: Acclimation and Assessment

Upon arrival at the ranch, Mustangs are given time to acclimate to their new surroundings. During this period, we observe their behavior, temperament, and unique characteristics. This assessment helps us tailor a training plan to meet each Mustang's individual needs.

Step 2: Building Trust

The taming process begins with trust-building exercises. Our trainers spend time near the Mustangs without imposing, allowing the horses to grow comfortable with human presence. Techniques like positive reinforcement and consistent handling are used to create a safe and respectful environment.

Step 3: Handling and Groundwork

Once trust is established, the Mustangs are introduced to basic handling skills. This includes haltering, leading, grooming, and standing for the farrier. Groundwork exercises are implemented to teach the Mustangs essential cues, encourage responsiveness, and develop their confidence in new situations.

Step 4: Advanced Training

As the Mustangs progress, they are introduced to saddle training, groundwork under pressure, and other essential skills to prepare them for a variety of disciplines. Our trainers focus on gentle, progressive methods to ensure the Mustangs feel secure and willing to learn.

Additionally, before being considered ready for new homes, all Mustangs will have mastered the following basic skills:

  • Approaching, haltering, and leading in a calm and controlled manner.

  • Allowing all four feet to be lifted, picked, and standing quietly for the farrier.

  • Loading and unloading calmly from a stock trailer.

  • Being brushed on both sides.

  • Lunging calmly at the walk, trot, and canter.

  • Will have traveling experience.

Step 5: Evaluation and Matching

When a Mustang is ready, they undergo a final evaluation to ensure they have the skills needed for adoption. Potential buyers are carefully matched with Mustangs based on their experience, goals, and compatibility to set both horse and human up for success. At Crossroads Ranch, we are committed to the growth and well-being of every Mustang. Our goal is to honor their wild spirit while helping them become reliable partners in their new homes. By focusing on trust, respect, and skill-building, we ensure that each Mustang has the best chance for a fulfilling future.
